Creating a Standard Web Task

Create a web task to specify which creatives you want the task to display. If multiple creatives are associated with a task, you can also specify how the creatives are displayed. For example, you can set the order in which the creatives are displayed or set rules so that a creative is displayed to a subset of the task's target audience.

Setting Up The Web Task

  1. On the navigation bar, click Tasks Tasks.
  2. Click Create Task.
  3. Click Web.
  4. The spot defines the location on a web page where the creatives are displayed. Select either a spot or spot set to the task. If you are creating a task that runs JavaScript on a web page, you must use a JavaScript spot. The spot selection can be changed later. For more information, see Manage Web Spots.
Note: In some cases, the type of spot that you select defines which types of creatives you can add to a task. For example, if you select a JavaScript spot, you must use a plain text creative.
  5. Click Create Task.
  6. Navigate to the Content tab of the task and click Add to select which creatives and messages to add to the task. To change the content or to configure it, click Content Selection to open the Content Selection tab. On this tab, you can take the following actions:
    • Select which creatives the task is displayed by clicking Select Content.
    • See a preview of the content on your site.
    • Create a new creative or message that is automatically added to the task by clicking Select Content and then selecting either New Creative or New Message.
Note: Adding more than 50 creatives to a task can negatively affect performance.

For more information, see Add Message or Creatives.

  7. If a creative that is included in the task contains a merge tag or a personalization variable, then you can use it to deliver personalized content to a web page. On the Content tab, click Personalize Creatives to open the Personalization tab.
    • Click Detail Tag to add a value to any personalization variables.
    • Select the event or data view attribute that corresponds to the information that you want the creative to display when the task delivers content.

For more information, see Personalize Creatives.

  8. If your task contains more than one creative, then you can configure distribution options for your creatives. Click Creative Assignment to open the Creative Assignment tab and select one of these options:
    • Select Frequency to specify how often a creative is displayed compared with the other creatives in this task. Next, set a percentage for each creative.
    • Select Sequential to set the order in which the creatives are displayed.
Note: After 24 hours the order is reset, and the first creative in the sequence is selected again.
    • Select Rule-based to split a task’s target audience into subgroups and associate a creative with each subgroup, thereby personalizing the content that your target audience sees. You can assign different criteria to each creative so that you can decide which creatives are delivered to different subgroups of the target audience.

For more information, see the Set Distribution of Content section of Manage the Content for Your Web Task.

  9. Limit the number of times that a customer sees the content that this task displays. On the Content tab, click Impression Limits to open the Impression Limits tab and select one of these options:
    • Limit total impressions per user defines the total number of times that a creative is displayed to a customer.
    • Limit impressions per user by time periodthen selectMaximum impression defines the maximum number of times that a creative is displayed to a customer.
    • Limit impressions per user by time periodthen selectTime period defines the maximum number of impressions that a user sees during a specified time interval.

For more information, see the Set Impression Limits section of Manage the Content for Your Web Task.

  10. Navigate to the Targeting tab to define the target audience for your task. You can set criteria that define the target audience, including items such as events, segments, and data views. On the Eligible page, you can specify which people to include in your target audience. On the Exclusions page, you can specify which people to exclude from your target audience.

For more information, see Add a Target Audience.

  11. Navigate to the Properties tab and add standard properties to your web task, such as a name, description, code, or any custom properties available for your organization. For more information, see Add Properties to Your Web Task.
  12. Navigate to the Permissions tab to customize permissions for this task. Customize permissions if you want to define which users and groups have access to view or edit the web task. For more information, see Customize Permissions for Web Tasks.
Note: Your administrator might have enabled default permissions. These can be changed by clicking Edit.
  13. Navigate to the Insights tab to add metrics to the task to measure the success of the content being delivered by the task. Set a primary metric by editing the default primary metric or adding a different one. A task can have only one primary metric, and primary metrics are defined by criteria such as data views and events.

Add secondary metrics to measure other benchmarks that you are interested in. A task can have multiple secondary metrics. However, each secondary metric can have only one data view or event.

For more information, see Setting Metrics for Web Tasks.

  14. Navigate to the Orchestrationthen selectSchedule tab and select one of these options:
    • Select No schedule if you want to start and end your task manually.
    • Select Set a schedule if you want to set a start and end date. You can also set a recurring schedule. For more information, see Schedule the Web Task.
  15. Navigate to the Orchestrationthen selectEvent Attributes tab and add the event attributes that you want to track. The event attribute value is included in the payload of all of the events that are associated with the task. For more information, see Adding Event Attributes to a Web Task.
Note: An event must be added to the task either as targeting criteria or as a trigger event before its attributes are available for selection.
  16. Navigate to the Orchestrationthen selectPriority tab and set the priority of your task relative to other tasks that deliver content to the same spot. Priority is set based on a scale of 1 to 5, where 1 is the highest priority and 5 is the lowest priority. For more information, see Set the Priority of Your Web Task.
Note: A task automatically locks while you are working on it so that another person cannot edit the task that you have open. Locked tasks contain a warning message that is visible when you open the task. Changes made to a task while it is locked by another user cannot be saved. For more information, see Working with Locked Items.

Start the Task

Once your web task is set up, you must change the status in the Orchestration tab to Mark Ready or Mark Ready and Publish before your task can become active.

  • Select Mark ready to change the status from Designing to Ready. A Ready status indicates that this item is ready to be published. When you are ready to promote an item from a Ready status to an Active status, click Publish.
Note: When you publish an item, you are prompted to publish any dependent items that are marked Ready.

Items with a Ready status can be changed back to a Designing status by clicking Return to designing. Changing this status to Designing prevents the item from being published.

Note: If your item has a Ready status and a start date, the item is not automatically published when the start date is reached. For example, if you are creating a task, it must be published in order for the start date to activate the task.
  • Select Mark ready and publish to change the status from Designing to Active. Items with an Active status cannot be changed back to Designing.
  • If your task uses on-premises data, such as an on-premises direct marketing task, an on-premises segment, or an on-premises bulk email task, you must run the task in addition to publishing it. This step also applies to bulk email tasks that use cloud data. If you want to execute the task immediately, click Publish and run now. To make the task active without executing it, click Publish only. The Publish only option is useful if you want to use an external scheduler to execute the task. Only active tasks that are not out of sync can be run.
Note: If you cannot run the task, ensure that you have been assigned the Publisher role or the Super Admin role in SAS Customer Intelligence 360.
