Create a Mobile Push Notification Task

About Push Notifications

Push notification messages are displayed while the user is not active in the mobile app. The intent of a push notification is to encourage the user to open the app.

Note: Enabling mobile messaging requires proper configuration of the mobile app and SAS Customer Intelligence 360. For more information, see Enable Mobile Messaging in SAS Customer Intelligence 360: Administration Guide.

Bulk and Triggered Push Notifications

There are two ways to send a mobile push notification:

  • In a bulk push to a target audience. Push notifications can be sent in bulk to mobile app users based on your customer database. The customer data might be from one of these sources:
    • an imported list
    • a segment
    • a transient file or transient device ID list
    • an audience
  • Triggered by an event that takes place outside the app. For example, if a coupon or an offer is generated for a customer, then that coupon system might trigger an event that sends the user a push notification that enables them to see their offer in the mobile app.

Push notifications can also be triggered to be sent when the user enters a geofence area. For information, see Upload Location Data in SAS Customer Intelligence 360: Administration Guide.

Create the Task

  1. On the navigation bar, click Tasks Tasks.
  2. Click Create Task and select Push Notification to deliver content to a mobile device.
  3. Select a delivery type to specify how the task delivers content:
    • Click Bulk to deliver messages at the same time. Select the source type for the data that is used for targeting and personalization.
      • If you selected Uploaded Data, you can use cloud data items.
      • If you selected Audiences, you can select data from an audience created in the application.
  4. If you selected Audiences as the source type, select which audience to use for the task.
  5. Select the mobile app where the message will be delivered.
TipYou can edit the Send Options section if you need to change the mobile app later.
  6. Click Create Task.

Add Content to the Task

  1. Navigate to the Content tab of the task and click Add to select which creatives and messages to add to the task.
Note: Adding more than 50 creatives to a task can negatively affect performance.

To change the content or to configure it, click Content Selection to open the Content Selection tab. On this tab, you can take the following actions:

    • Change the creatives that are displayed for the task by clicking Select Content.
    • Create a new creative or message that is automatically added to the task by clicking Select Content and then selecting either New Creative or New Message.
Note: The content that is shown is not an actual preview. It is a visual representation of what the message might look like when it is delivered to the recipient.

For more information, see Creating Mobile Push Notification Creatives.

For more information, see Creating Creatives.

  3. If a creative that is included in the task contains a merge tag or a personalization variable, then you can use it to deliver personalized content in a push notification. On the Content tab, click Personalize Creatives to open the Personalization tab.
    • Click Detail Tag to add a value to any personalization variables.
    • Select the merge tag that corresponds to the information that you want the creative to display when the task delivers content.
Note: The task targeting criteria or trigger event definition (for triggered push notifications) for a task determines the event or data view attributes that you can select.
    • (Optional) Enter a default value. The default value is used when the customer data cannot be retrieved. For example, if the user’s identity is not known, you might replace the name with “Valued Customer”.

For more information, see Personalizing Content.

  4. If the task contains more than one creative, you can configure distribution options for the creatives. The available options depend on the type of task. On the Content tab, select two or more creatives, and then click Creative Assignment to open the Creative Assignment tab.

    Select one of these methods:

    • Select Frequency to specify how often a creative is displayed compared with the other creatives in this task. Next, set a percentage for each creative.
    • Select Sequential to set the order in which the creatives are displayed. This option is not available for bulk push tasks.

      CAUTION

The order is reset every 24 hours. After 24 hours the order is reset, and the first creative in the sequence is selected again. If the content delivery schedule for your task is longer than 24 hours, the creatives might not be displayed in the order that you have specified.

    • Select Rule-based to split a task’s target audience into subgroups and associate a creative with each subgroup, thereby personalizing the content that your target audience sees. You can assign different criteria to each creative so that you can decide which creatives are delivered to different subgroups of the target audience.
Note: This option is not available if audiences is used as the source type for a bulk task.

For more information, see Specify the Distribution of Content.

  5. Limit the number of times that a customer sees the content that this task displays. On the Content tab, click Impression Limits to open the Impression Limits tab and select one of these options:
    • Limit total impressions per user defines the total number of times that a creative is displayed to a customer.
    • Limit impressions per user by time periodthen selectMaximum impression defines the maximum number of times that a creative is displayed to a customer.
    • Limit impressions per user by time periodthen selectTime period defines the maximum number of impressions that a user sees during a specified time interval.

For more information, see Set Impression Limits.

Add Targeting

Navigate to the Targeting tab to define the target audience for your task. You can set criteria that define the target audience, including items such as events, segments, and data views. On the Eligible page, you can specify which people to include in your target audience. On the Exclusions page, you can specify which people to exclude from your target audience.

For more information, see these links:

Define Task Properties

Navigate to the Properties tab and add standard properties (such as a name, description, code, or any custom properties available for your organization) to your task. You can update the following types of properties:

  • Standard properties, such as the task name, description, and code.
  • Custom properties are specifically applicable to your goal or organization and must be added by your administrator.

For more information, see Add Properties to Your Task.

Customize Task Permissions

Navigate to the Permissions tab to customize permissions for this task. Customize permissions if you want to define which users and groups have access to view or edit the task.

Note: Your administrator might have enabled default permissions. These can be changed by clicking Edit.

For more information, see Customize Task Permissions.

Set Schedule Options

Navigate to the Orchestrationthen selectSchedule tab and select one of these options:

  • Select No schedule if you want to start and end your task manually.
  • Select Set a schedule if you want to set a start and end date. You can also set a recurring schedule.

For more information, see Set a Schedule.

Add Trigger Event

For a triggered push notification task, navigate to the Orchestrationthen selectTrigger tab and select the event to trigger the task. Select an event that triggers the task to send a push notification. Push notifications can be triggered only by an event that takes place outside the mobile app.

TipYou can click Add an attribute condition add attribute conditions that must be present when the event occurs.

For example, you might create two push notification tasks that are triggered to deliver when a customer visits a page in the mobile app. When the customer clicks a television, you want to deliver a push notification that offers free delivery if they purchase the item today. When the customer clicks a laptop, you want to deliver a push notification that offers 10% off. To enable the mobile app to deliver the applicable push notification, supply attribute values for the trigger events when you create the tasks. In this case, one task would have a trigger event attribute value of television and the other would have an attribute value of laptop. Based on those attribute values, the correct push notification is delivered when the customer clicks a television or a laptop. Separate push notifications are delivered in the order in which each notification is triggered.

The push notification is sent when all of the conditions are met.

Enable Job Summary Notifications

For a bulk push notification task, you can add recipients to the list of people who are notified by email when a task executes and finishes processing. Navigate to the Orchestrationthen selectJob Summary Notifications page.

TipIt is recommended that you use only email distribution lists—instead of individual email addresses—for the task-level settings. If you want to update the task-level recipients, you must republish the task. When you republish a task, the data that is used to govern impression limits for the task is reset. For example, if you republish a task that tracks impression limits for users, that means that each customer’s impression limit history for that task data is cleared during the republish. As a result, republishing a task can affect metric accuracy and your task’s contact policies of that task.

For more information, see Send Job Summary Notifications.

Set Metrics

Navigate to the Insights tab to add metrics to the task to measure the success of the content being delivered by the task. Set a primary metric by editing the default primary metric or adding a different one. A task can have only one primary metric, and primary metrics are defined by criteria such as data views and events.

Add secondary metrics to measure other benchmarks that you are interested in. A task can have multiple secondary metrics. However, each secondary metric can have only one data view or event.

  1. On the Insights tab, click Add.
  2. (Optional) Change the default primary metric. Hover over the metric in the Primary Metric section and click Edit.

The events and data views that you add to a primary metric determine the actions or behaviors that must be satisfied in order for a conversion to occur. If you include multiple events and data views in your primary metric, a conversion happens after the first occurrence of any of the events or data views.

(Optional) Select Classify this selection if you want the metric to be classified as either a contact or response.

  3. (Optional) Click Add Secondary Metric to measure other benchmarks that you are interested in. A task can have multiple secondary metrics. However, each secondary metric can have only one data view or event.

(Optional) Select Classify this selection if you want the metric to be classified as either a contact or response.

  4. Select Stop delivery after conversion to stop delivering creatives when the primary metric for the task is met.

For more information, see Set Metrics.

Submit Task for Approval

If your task requires approval, navigate to the Approvalsthen selectApproval Cycles tab, then click Submit for Approval.

For more information, see Getting Approvals.

Publish the Task

Once your task is set up, you must change the status on the Orchestration tab to Mark Ready or Mark Ready and Publish before your task can become active.

For more information, see Publish or Activate the Task.

Stop the Execution of the Task

Sometimes a bulk push notification task encounters a problem and the task becomes unresponsive. To address this issue, you can stop the task execution, which halts any pending processes. Only users with either the Super Admin role or the Configuration Admin role in SAS Customer Intelligence 360 have sufficient access to stop task execution.

To determine whether the task needs to be stopped:

  1. Navigate to the Orchestrationthen selectExecution page of the task.
  2. Click Refresh to refresh the task.
  3. The value of the Most recent update time reflects the most recently recorded an update for this task execution. If the value has not changed in some time, click Stop Task Execution to check the progress of the task. Review the data that is available and determine whether you want to stop the task.

Stopping the task execution of a bulk push notification task halts delivery of any unprocessed push notifications.

CAUTION

Re-running the task sends push notifications to all of the recipients in the target audience, even if the push notification was sent to the recipients previously. As a result, running a task that was previously stopped can result in duplicate push notifications being sent to recipients.

Pause the Task

Navigate to the Orchestration tab of the task and select Pause.

You can pause an active task to temporarily stop delivery of a task. For example, you can pause a task if you to stop content from being delivered while you correct a mistake.

For more information, see Pause the Task.

End the Task

End the task when you no longer need the task to deliver content or when the scheduled end date is reached. Ending a task changes the status changes from Active to Complete. Completed tasks do not deliver content and cannot be modified. Any unsaved changes to the task are lost.

To stop the task, click End on the Orchestration tab.

For more information, see End the Task.
