Web Task, In-App Message Task, and Mobile Spot Task
When you define a target audience on the Targeting tab of a web, web A/B, in-app message, mobile spot, or mobile spot A/B task, you select the criteria that define your target audience. If no criteria are added, the target audience includes everyone. The data source for these tasks is cloud data.
When adding criteria, these folders are available:
- Current Session Attributes contains session data for the current session.
- Customer Behavior contains event-based data that is collected based on a user’s behavior. The data in this folder comes from events that exist in the system.
- Customer Profile contains customer data, including existing segments. If applicable,
it also includes imported data and transient files.
Note: Transient files are not available for web tasks.
- Spots contains spots that are used in the current task and contain
attributes.
Note: This folder is available only for web and mobile spot tasks.
- Decision Flows and Models contains data from SAS Intelligent Decisioning. This folder appears only after SAS Intelligent Decisioning is enabled for your tenant. For more information, contact SAS Technical Support.
You can specify how the criteria that you add are evaluated.
- You can add eligibility criteria to define which people to include in your target audience.
- You can add exclusion criteria to
define which people to exclude from your target audience. This feature enables
you to enforce your organization’s contact policy by limiting saturation and
over-communication. For example:
- You can prevent users from receiving too many interactions with the same or similar creatives and messages across channels, which can create a negative customer experience.
- Within a bulk email task that uses uploaded data, you can exclude all users who were given a web creative from specific tasks within the previous five days.
If a person is a member of a target audience, it means that the person is eligible to receive task content. However, membership in a target audience does not guarantee that the person gets the content. For example, these situations might prevent a target audience member from seeing task content:
- The person is part of the control group of an A/B test task.
- The person does not navigate to the web page or mobile app page that contains the spot while the task is active.
- There are competing tasks delivering content to the same spot. In this case, the content that is delivered is based on task priority. If the priorities are equal, the content is delivered randomly.
Triggered Push Notification Task, Triggered Email Task, and External System Task
To be included in the target audience of a triggered push notification, triggered email, or external system task, a user must first complete the trigger event while the task is active. After the trigger event occurs, the user is evaluated against the targeting criteria in the task.
If the user satisfies the targeting criteria, SAS Customer Intelligence 360 verifies these requirements:
- For push notification tasks, the user must have a valid mobile device ID and token. For more information, see Prerequisites for Receiving a Mobile Push Notification and What Happens after You Publish a Mobile Push Notification Task.
- For email tasks, the user has not opted out of receiving emails. For more information, see About Contact Preferences in SAS Customer Intelligence 360: Administration Guide.
When you define a target audience on the Targeting tab of a triggered or external system task, you select the criteria that define your target audience. If no criteria are added, the target audience includes everyone.
The data source for a triggered push notification task and triggered email task is cloud data. The data source for an external system task is on-premises data.
When adding criteria, these folders are available:
- Current Session Attributes contains session data for the current session. This folder is not available for triggered email tasks.
In addition, transient files should not be used for triggered tasks, because the transient data is deleted after the first occurrence.
- Decision Flows and Models contains data from SAS Intelligent Decisioning. This folder appears only after SAS Intelligent Decisioning is enabled for your tenant. For more information, contact SAS Technical Support.

- For an outbound email campaign, you can exclude customers who opened an email in the past week.
There is no guarantee that the person will receive the content that was sent. These are examples of situations that prevent content from being delivered:
- The user has opted out of notifications on their mobile device.
- ISP outages occurred that prevent successful content delivery.
- The email bounced.
Bulk Push Notification Task and Bulk Email with Uploaded Data Task
When you define a target audience on the Targeting tab of a bulk push notification or a bulk email (uploaded data) task, you can select one criterion from the Customer Profile folder to define your target audience. In this folder you can access segments, imported lists, and transient data. If you do not select a criterion, then no content is delivered. The data source for these tasks is cloud data.
A bulk task delivers content to everyone in the target audience, with these exceptions:
- For push notification tasks, the user must have a valid mobile device ID and token. For more information, see Prerequisites for Receiving a Mobile Push Notification and What Happens after You Publish a Mobile Push Notification Task.
- For email tasks, the user has not opted out of receiving emails. For more information, see About Contact Preferences in SAS Customer Intelligence 360: Administration Guide.

On-Premises Tasks and Direct Marketing Tasks
If you are creating an on-premises task such as an on-premises direct marketing task or an on-premises bulk email task, the data that is available depends on what is in your data mart. You can select criteria from the Customer Profile folder, although the data that is available depends on the task type.
If SAS Intelligent Decisioning is enabled for your tenant, then you have the option to select criteria from the Decision Flows and Models folder. For more information, contact SAS Technical Support.
Anyone who is a member of the target audience of a direct marketing task is added to the export file.
For on-premises bulk email tasks, members of the target audience are sent emails as long as they have not opted out of email communications and they have a valid email address.
