Specifying Information for Email Header Fields
Edit the Header section to specify the information for the email header.
- Enter a subject for your email in the Subject field. You can select a merge tag to personalize this field. For example, you can add a customer name if it is available.
- (Optional) Use generative AI (GenAI)
to suggest alternative subjects. The suggestions match the tone of the original
subject. Merge tags are supported.
TipReview the GenAI Best Practices for Generating Subjects when you are first using this option.
- Click Create GenAI alternatives.
- Select the subject that you want to use and click Apply to subject. To generate a new list of suggestions, click Refresh subject line options.
You can also update the original subject to generate new suggestions.
IMPORTANT It is your responsibility to review any output generated with AI to ensure that the AI-generated content that you select is appropriate and accurate for its intended purpose. - Enter text in the Preview
text field if you want to control the text that email clients
display when the recipient views their inbox. When preview text is not defined, the
inbox typically shows the beginning section of the email body. Click
to personalize the preview text by adding a merge tag.
CAUTION
Do not set preview text when you send long emails and you need to track open events. Email open events are generated based on two tracking pixels: an initial-open pixel in the email's header and a tracking pixel at the end of the email's body. When longer emails are truncated in an email client (such as Gmail), the tracking pixel at the end of the email might never be loaded. In these situations, the email's open event depends on the initial-open pixel.
Because preview text is defined in the email header, there is a conflict with the initial-open pixel. As a result, when you define preview text, the end tracking pixel must load in the client in order for an open event to be recorded. Depending on the length of your emails, consider setting preview text based on how accurately you need to track open events.
- Specify the email address of your
recipient in the To field by selecting a merge tag. The
recipient addresses that are used for the email are based on the targeting criteria
that are specified for this task. Review the considerations for cloud and
on-premises emails before filling out this field:
- For cloud data, the
To field is pre-populated with the special
merge tag syntax,
%%email_contact%%. It automatically retrieves the email addresses of your recipients from the data source. You can select a merge tag to add personalized details such as the recipient's first name.CAUTION
The %%email_address%% merge tag is deprecated. If you used the
%%email_address%%merge tag, update this value to%%email_contact%%. The value%%email_address%%is deprecated. For persistent customer data, inserting the
%%email_contact%%merge tag retrieves the email values from the customer table in the data hub. The customer table's definition must have a column that uses the EMAIL_CONTACT field tag.If the members of the target audience are sourced from a transient table, the system attempts to resolve the
%%email_contact%%merge tag with data from the transient table. If the transient table does not have a column with the EMAIL_CONTACT field tag, but the transient table does share an identity column with an existing customer table, the system can bridge the data. In this case, the email values are populated from the persistent customer table if there is a column with the EMAIL_CONTACT field tag.
If the task is using an audience for targeting and personalization, the
%%email_contact%%merge tag retrieves the email values from the email contact column in the audience. - For on-premises data, select the
merge tag that matches the address field from your on-premises
data.
TipTo quickly find the on-premises merge tag that you want to use, use the folders that are labeled with the OnPrem: prefix.
- For cloud data, the
To field is pre-populated with the special
merge tag syntax,
- Complete the sections for the
From field and the Reply-to
field. The send agent for the email task determines the values that are available
in
the drop-down lists for these fields.
To set these fields, use the drop-down lists to select values:
- If you select a domain (that is, not the full address), you can manually enter the user name for the email address or use a merge tag to populate the value.
- Enter a value or use a merge tag to set the Display as field. This is a user-friendly value that appears before the email address.
- For the Reply-to field, you can select Specify address to enter an address that is not in the list.
Note: If you select a complete email address from the list (that is, the entry is not only a domain), the value is read-only and cannot be modified. Similarly, the Display as field cannot be modified if the value is specified in the send agent. To change the send agent, hover over the Send Options section and click Edit. You can also create a send agent if a send agent does not exist that meets your needs.
