CSSM Procedure

PROC CSSM Compared with PROC SSM

PROC CSSM is the CAS version of PROC SSM. This means that it requires SAS Cloud Analytic Services (CAS) in order to run. Except for this difference, PROC CSSM and PROC SSM are identical in their modeling capabilities. Because it works in the cloud environment, PROC CSSM enables you to efficiently handle large numbers of BY groups by exploiting all the available cores and concurrent threads to process them in parallel. The scoring features that are provided by the SCORE statement and the simulation smoothing features that are provided by the SIMSMOOTH statement are new in PROC CSSM version 2024.11 and are not available in PROC SSM. These two procedures share virtually identical syntax and should produce essentially identical output. However, there are some important differences between them that arise mainly because CAS tables do not use observation order:

  • The ID statement is required in PROC CSSM; it is optional in PROC SSM.

  • In cases where multiple observations can have the same ID value, such as in panel data settings, you must use the new OBSINDEX statement to ensure the reproducibility of the computations. The ID variable together with the OBSINDEX variable uniquely indexes each observation within a BY group.
